60% OF COMMUTER JOURNEYS, CARS AND CAR PARKS COULD BE ERADICATED SAYS TONY LYNCH, CEO AT FAXI

Over the past six months large organisations across the UK have provided Faxi with data for over 100,000 commuter journeys. Initial studies have revealed that based upon proximity of half a mile or less, 60% of the 9,000 daily car journeys analysed could be eradicated if commuters shared their commute with co-workers.

Faxi has identified that this percentage could rise even further, once Faxi’s new journey-matching algorithm is released.

The findings indicate just how many commuting journeys are wasted on a daily basis, causing unnecessary cost, congestion and harmful carbon and particulate emissions.

While commuter car pooling is not yet extensively adopted, over 200% growth is expected by 2025. The introduction of driver-less cars in the next 10 years, which are likely to be sold on a per-seat basis  rather than conventional car purchase,  could  drastically reduce  the amount of vehicles needed to transport these 9,000 commuters  to 1,500 or less.

So, if commercially available driver-less cars are available in the next 10 years and they can be proven to have the positive effects as iterated above, will multi-storey car park projects currently under development or planned for development  be redundant before they are even paid for?

An investment in commuter carpooling and the preparation for driver-less cars will mean that large organisations like hospitals, which over the next 10 years need to expand their facility, will be able to plan to redevelop their car parks for essential construction projects.

In light of the drastic potential change which lies ahead for transportation and infrastructure, organisations might benefit from analysing their commuter data. Reviewing whether the millions currently budgeted for constructing car parks could be invested to incentivise commuter carpooling and creating a behavioural change which will seamlessly integrate with driver-less cars when they arrive for the benefit of all.

Faxi offers large organisations a service that will analyse commuter data identifying commuter carpool opportunities and then work with employees to create shared journeys -  now and for the future.
